Shilajit and ashwagandha are probably the two most searched Ayurvedic names in India right now. So it’s no surprise the most common question I get is: can I take both?
Short answer: yes, most healthy adults can, and they’re often combined in Ayurvedic practice. The more useful answer is why you’d combine them, and what to check before you do.
They do different jobs
This is the part most product pages skip. Shilajit and ashwagandha aren’t two versions of the same thing. They’re studied for quite different reasons.
Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin whose main active compound is fulvic acid. It’s traditionally used for stamina, strength and vitality. Its best-known human trials looked at men’s testosterone levels and sperm parameters.
Ashwagandha is a root, classed in Ayurveda as an adaptogen, something that helps the body cope with stress. Its strongest human evidence is around stress, sleep and cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone.
So the logic of combining them is simple: one is traditionally used for energy and vitality, the other for stress and recovery. Think of it as “go” and “settle”, rather than double the same effect.
Why “KSM-66” on the label matters
Not all ashwagandha is the same. The powder in a generic capsule can be leaf, root, or a mix, with no guarantee of how much active compound is in it.
KSM-66 is a branded, standardised extract made only from the root, standardised to at least 5% withanolides, the plant’s main active compounds. It’s also one of the most clinically studied ashwagandha extracts in the world, and it’s made in India.
Two trials worth knowing about:
- Stress. In a 60-day trial of 64 adults with chronic stress, 600 mg a day of a high-concentration ashwagandha root extract lowered stress scores and serum cortisol compared with placebo.
- Male fertility. In a 90-day trial of 46 men with low sperm counts, 675 mg a day of KSM-66 was linked to higher sperm count, semen volume and motility compared with placebo.
The reason I’m telling you the doses is so you can check any label against them, including ours. A gummy with 50 mg of unbranded ashwagandha is not the same as what was studied.
Who should skip the combination
Please speak to your doctor before taking either one if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid both.
- Have a thyroid condition. Ashwagandha can affect thyroid hormone levels.
- Have an autoimmune condition, or take immunosuppressants.
- Take sedatives, sleep medication, or medicine for blood pressure or diabetes.
- Have a liver condition. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha.
And stop taking it if you notice anything unusual, like stomach upset, unusual tiredness or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
How to take them together
- Pick one product or two, not five. A single combined supplement is easier to stick with than separate jars.
- Check the doses against the studied ranges above.
- Give it time. The trials ran 60 to 90 days. A week tells you very little.
- Mornings work for most people. Some people find ashwagandha relaxing and prefer evenings. Try both and see.
