Shilajit for Women: What the Research Says, and What It Doesn’t

“Shilajit toh mardon ke liye hota hai na?”

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard some version of this. Walk past any chemist and the shilajit packaging tells you who it’s “for”: dark colours, a muscular man, words like “power” and “josh”.

So let me answer the question properly. Yes, women can take shilajit. But I’ll also tell you exactly where the science is solid and where it’s thin, because you deserve both.

Why shilajit got labelled a “men’s thing”

In Ayurveda, shilajit is a rasayana, a rejuvenating substance. The classical texts don’t describe it as a male-only remedy. It was used for strength, stamina and recovery in general.

The “men only” image is mostly modern marketing. Brands found that men’s performance claims sold, and the packaging followed.

There’s a second reason, and it’s a less flattering one for the research world. Almost every modern human trial on shilajit has been done in men. The best-known studies looked at testosterone and sperm. That’s useful if you’re a man. It leaves women with very little direct data.

What we actually know

Here’s my honest summary.

What’s reasonably established:

  • Purified shilajit has been taken by adults in human studies for 90 days without serious safety concerns.
  • Its main active compound, fulvic acid, is studied for its antioxidant activity and its role in how the body absorbs minerals.
  • Shilajit naturally contains minerals, including iron. That’s relevant to a lot of Indian women, given how common low iron is.

What’s promising but not proven in women:

  • Energy and fatigue. This is the most common reason women tell me they want to try it. There’s early and animal research on fatigue and on how shilajit supports the cell’s energy machinery, but no strong trials in women yet.
  • Stamina and recovery after exercise. Again, the human data is mostly in men.

What I’d ignore:

  • Any claim that shilajit “balances female hormones”, “fixes PCOS” or “boosts fertility” in women. There’s no good evidence for any of it. If a label promises this, be sceptical of the whole product.

How women can take it

The human trials used 200 to 500 mg of purified shilajit a day for about three months. There’s no separate research-backed dose for women, so most women start at the lower end.

  • Resin: a small pea-sized amount dissolved in warm water or milk, once a day.
  • Gummies: as directed on the label. This is the easier route if you hate the taste, and most women I talk to do.

Take it consistently for at least two to three months before deciding whether it’s working for you.

When to skip it

Please don’t take shilajit if you are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding. There’s no safety data, so it’s a clear no.
  • Trying to conceive and under fertility treatment, unless your doctor has okayed it.
  • Living with an iron-overload condition such as haemochromatosis.
  • On regular medication for blood pressure, diabetes or thyroid, without checking with your doctor first.

And whatever you buy, buy tested. Raw shilajit can carry heavy metals. I’ve written a full guide on how to check that.

Why we made a shilajit gummy for women

Honestly? Because women kept asking me for one, and kept telling me they felt awkward buying a jar with a bodybuilder on it.

Allove Her Vitality Gummies are shilajit gummies formulated with women in mind. A daily serving of two gummies has 300 mg of shilajit extract, with Shatavari, Ashoka, Passion Flower, Amla, zinc (Yashad Bhasma), Black Cohosh, Gotu Kola and ginger. Every batch is lab-tested, and the packaging won’t make you hide it in a drawer.

FAQ

Is shilajit safe for women?

Purified, lab-tested shilajit has been taken by adults in studies without serious safety concerns. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, under fertility treatment, or on regular medication should speak to a doctor first.

What are the benefits of shilajit for women?

Shilajit contains fulvic acid and minerals including iron, and many women take it for energy. Most human trials were done in men, so the evidence specifically in women is still limited.

Can I take shilajit during periods?

There’s no evidence that you need to stop during your period. If you notice any change in your cycle after starting, stop and speak to your gynaecologist.

Does shilajit help with PCOS?

There’s no good clinical evidence that shilajit helps PCOS. If you have PCOS, see our guide to PCOS vs PCOD.
